$2 Frosted Centerpiece

I bought this "goblet" at the thrift store for $1.75 a while ago, and have used it for many things since then. Recently, I spotted and pinned these candles made with yarn and frosted spray paint and LOVED the way they looked.  I thought rubber bands would work, too. With Christmas coming, I was looking for ideas for a table centerpiece and this seemed a good starting point.

So, I grabbed the goblet and added the rubber bands.
Next, I gave it two coats of frosted spray paint.  I used Rustoleum Frosted Glass Spray Paint.  I got it a while ago at the local hardware store, but I did find it at Amazon...Frosted Glass Spray Paint.  Only had to wait about two minutes between coats...

Ten minutes later it was dry!  I removed the rubber bands and voila!  You will want to use a sealer for this to make it water resistant...I found this one on Amazon from Krylon, or this one. It's a spray and I have not used it, so I can't comment on the quality.  Or you could use polyurethane and brush it on very carefully.  I'll be honest, I take a feather duster to this for cleaning or I wipe it down with a dry towel, but if you will be washing it, then definitely seal it!
Isn't it gorgeous?! I love it so much, and for under two bucks! :)  It looks awesome with a candle flickering inside.  This picture doesn't do it justice...
I will probably add some winter greens to the base and use it as a centerpiece for the holidays.

  9. How neat! Would you be able to drink out of it? I'm considering doing this to some wine glasses

  13. @ Camilla, I would think it would need some sort of coating to be drinkable. Wine glasses would be awesome, so if you make them, please share! :-)

  14. @ Clarissa, I turned it upside down to spray.

  16. I got the classes and am ordering the frosted spray from Ace Hardware. Is there anyway you would be able to wash these? I am trying to make them as wine glasses (I got 4 stemless glasses). Is there something to put over the frosted spray paint or will that be enough? Planning on making these within the next few days.

  18. I found some clear gloss with a satin finish by Kryolan at Walmart. Judging by the cap it may work for this project with a few coats.

  19. Im painting some now. To avoid getting it inside the glass (I'm painting a pilsner beer glass), I simply spray painted it upside down with the opening on a surface.

Am running into a dripping problem though and it's looking uneven but it's still drying.

Good idea about the sealant! Gonna try that so it'll be able to be washed!

  20. I found my frosted spray at Walmart, also at Homedepot. Look for the rustoleum brand. My only question is I followed the directions, but when pulling off the rubberbands there was extra that was attached to the rubberbands and the glass. Do you pull the rubber bands off while it's still drying?

  21. Tried this today, they turned out absolutely awful. Warning: do not spray close. They bubbled up upon the removal of the rubber bands it was crusty and uneven. Bye bye $15 :(

  22. @MicheleWhitt, I did pull the rubber bands off when it was dry to the touch, about 10 min after I sprayed and they came off cleanly. I left the rubber bands on longer when I made my candle holders and I did get some spray paint that got up under the bands. I just used a toothpick to scrape it off.

@ekr001, I am really sorry this didn't work for you, I didn't get bubbles at all, the only thing I can think of other than spraying from further away is maybe the temp outside when you sprayed. It was about mid-60s and sunny on the day that I did this.

  28. I tried this project and had issues with the paint chipping when I took rubber bands off. I used a matte primer spary paint. Maybe that is my issue. Any suggestions?!! Please help!
